Camden Black Worker Group (CBWG) – The Group for all Camden Black and Ethnic Minority staff – Unifying workers across all unions held its annual general meeting (AGM) on Thursday 19 September 2019.
There were around 40 delegates in attendance. Both of our invited guest speakers were in attendance and they were fully engaged by the delegates on their topic of discussion. Stand Up To Racism activist Brian Richardson spoke about why we must organise to combat the rise of far right activities and the growing influence of hard right politicians across the globe. Councillor Abdul Hai gave a presentation on the initiatives the political leadership are pursuing in collaboration with the management leadership to ensure that all staff are given equal opportunity to fulfil their potential by pursuing development and career progression without hindrances. Following their presentation, a question and answer followed and delegates were given the opportunity to contribute ideas to ensure that no one is left behind and that the perception of the council as an equal opportunity and valuing diversity employer is enhanced by the genuine efforts of the current leadership.
Camden Branch Secretary, Liz Wheatley spoke about the work the branch is doing in collaboration with the group including pushing the agenda on fair recruitment, selection and progression processes, fair representation of staff from Black and ethnic minority background in senior management level, stand up to racism events to show solidarity with our sisters and brothers and combined efforts in other campaign matters.
‘Jare presented the group’s annual activity report by talking through the main highlights.
Election of officers and executive members presented to the meeting was ratified unanimously (see enclosed)
A brief report on preparations for this year Black History event scheduled for Friday 18 October was presented by Judy Frederick.
This was followed by a networking/social session.
