When you retire you can continue your membership of UNISON.
If you have been a UNISON member for at least two years on the day you retire, and receive a state or occupational pension, you can become a retired member on payment of a one-off subscription of £15 to the branch. You will retain your current membership number and card. Please fill in the attached form to do this and send in a cheque for £15 made payable to “Camden Unison”.
As a retired member you can keep in touch with your old workplace colleagues, attend branch meetings, and take part in campaigning work. Retired members also enjoy the benefits of UNISON membership, including Legal Advice, Welfare Support and Special discounts on a wide range of financial and other services.
You will continue to receive U magazine, which goes out four times a year to all UNISON members. You will also receive interactive, the newsletter for UNISON retired members, as an insert to U magazine.
UNISON is unique among British trade unions in having a retired members’ organisation which mirrors the structure of that for working members. This means retired members can still participate at all levels of the union. They can attend branch meetings, and have representation on the Branch Committee and Regional Committee, which has a member on the National Retired Members’ Committee.
The Retired Members’ Conference meets every year to enable retired members from branches to debate issues important to them. It has the right to submit two motions to the agenda of the National Delegate Conference.
Camden branch has just over 500 retired members. They elect a Branch Retired Members’ Secretary and a Branch Retired Members’ Committee annually.
The branch is affiliated to the Greater London Region of the National Pensioners’ Convention (NPC), and is a supporting member organisation of Camden Age UK and the London Older People’s Strategies Group (LOPSG).
