Iceberg demo outside Downing Street

There was an emergency protest outside Downing Street on 26 August when news broke that Arctic ice had reduced to the lowest cover ever.  As George Monbiot wrote two days later in the Guardian: ‘What we are seeing, here and now, is the transformation of the atmospheric physics of this planet.’

Reports cited by George Monbiot say it is possible that Arctic ice could disappear in the summer months in this decade or the next, far ahead of what authoritative forecasters considered probable. New research is showing that arctic warming is likely to be responsible for the extremes now affecting temperate areas such as northern Europe.

Meanwhile oil and gas giants are seeking to further exploit the Arctic with increased drilling.  Greenpeace activists are preventing one rig from operating.
