Camden UNISON is a branch of UNISON, one of Britain’s main trade unions, which has more than a million members.
Camden UNISON is the largest trade union branch in the borough with about 3,000 members. Most of those still work directly for Camden Council, but there are many others employed on private contracts or in voluntary sector organisations.

UNISON has members across a range of service groups, with the single biggest concentration in local government along with hundreds of thousands working in the NHS, further and higher education, and privatised utilities. The union’s head office is on Euston Road, here in Camden.
UNISON has existed since 1993 as a result of the merger between the local government union, NALGO, healthworkers’ union, COHSE, and NUPE, which had members in both local councils and the NHS.
The sovereign body of the union is the National Delegate Conference, which meets once a year. It consists of delegates from branches throughout the country. The leading official of the union is the General Secretary, who is elected by a postal ballot of all members every five years. Members also elect the National Executive Committee (NEC), which is the ruling body of the union in between conferences, and Service Group Executives for each service group (such as Local Government; Health; Further & Higher Education; the Voluntary & Community Sector; and Water, Environment & Transport).
