Unison NEC member Jon Rogers has an interesting article up on Unison’s recruitment success in 2011. The union has recruited more members last year than in any year since its foundation in 1993.
This good news demonstrates that where trade unions take a clear public stance on an issue – such as the pensions dispute – workers who may have been sceptical or lacking in knowledge about trade unionism can learn more about its value and join up. The larger that union membership is, the stronger trade unions will be in trying to press their case for the defence and improvement of the terms & conditions of ordinary working people.
