The executives of the two main teachers’ unions (the NUT and NASUWT) have rejected the ‘Heads of Agreement’ that were put forward as a potential ‘deal’ in the dispute over the Teachers’ Pension Scheme.
The proposal they faced is very similar to the framework for the local government pensions proposal – with later retirement ages, pensions calculated on average salary (not final salary as at the moment) and rises in contributions [which would hit them even before 2014, when increases would hit local government staff]. The offer fails to deliver a good deal for members, and so the teachers’ unions can’t give it a pass mark!
